In view of this, Kevin Lane, a scientist at Cancer Research UK, and his colleagues studied the effect of Mannose on the growth of cancer cells in a new experiment. They report that mannose slows down the growth of cancer cells and suggest that mannose may interfere with glucose metabolism. In addition, the combination of cisplatin or doxorubicin with mannose significantly increased cell death.
Researchers administered mannose to tumour mice through feeding tubes (three times a week) and drinking water (continuously). The results showed that the treatment was well tolerated and seemed to slow down the growth of tumors either alone or in combination with doxorubicin.
Cell sensitivity to mannose is associated with lower levels of phosphate mannose isomerase (PMI). The team tested the levels of PMI in different human tumors (ovarian, kidney, breast, prostate and colorectal cancers) with varying results. Particularly noteworthy is the low level of PMI in colorectal tumors, which means that they may be more sensitive to mannose. In addition, the incidence of colorectal cancer in mice treated with mannose was significantly reduced.
Researchers concluded that mannose therapy may represent a simple and safe way to target the growth of multiple tumors.
